Frequently asked questions

Privacy and data

Where are my bills stored?

In the app’s private storage on your phone. Nowhere else. There is no server, no account and no sync. Settings shows exactly how many bills and how many megabytes are on the device.

Does anything get uploaded?

No. The app never sends bill data anywhere. Data leaves the phone only when you share an export ZIP yourself, or send a feedback email yourself. Put the phone in airplane mode and everything works the same.

Do I need an account?

No. There is nothing to sign into.

Does the app track me or use analytics?

No. There is no analytics SDK, no advertising SDK and no tracking. See the privacy policy.

What happens if I uninstall the app?

Everything it stored is deleted with it. Export first. A monthly export, kept wherever you keep your files, is your backup.

What if I lose my phone?

The data goes with it, for the same reason nobody else can read it. Keep your exports.

Can I lock the app?

Yes. Settings → App lock sets a PIN required to open the app. Off by default. There is no recovery if you forget it; the only way back in is reinstalling, which deletes all bills.

Reading bills

What does the app read from a bill?

Amount paid, date, merchant and address, invoice number, tax number (GSTIN, TRN or VAT number) and the tax breakup (CGST / SGST / IGST, or a single VAT amount and rate). Category is suggested from your past corrections and from keyword rules.

Why is a field amber?

The app is not sure of that value. Amber points, it does not block. Fix the field or save it as read.

The amount is wrong. Why?

Usually the photo. Thermal receipts with faint print, taken from too far, are the hard case: the phone still returns text, but the characters are wrong. Move closer and retake. If it keeps happening on a particular kind of bill, long-press the photo in Review to see What SnapBill read, then tap Report a wrong read. That is how the reading improves.

Why did it read a lower amount than the total on the bill?

Amount means amount paid: after discounts, the line that matches the tax breakup and your card statement. A bill with a ₹174 gross, ₹63 discount and ₹111 paid is filed as ₹111.

Does it handle bills from outside India?

Yes. Currency is read off the bill (AED, USD, GBP and others), VAT bills get a single tax amount and rate, and a TRN or VAT number replaces the GSTIN. Set a home currency in Settings and enter the exchange rate from your card statement; the app never fetches rates online.

Can it read a PDF invoice?

Yes. Tap Import and pick the PDF. Each page is rendered and read like a photo. The original PDF is what gets stored and exported.

What about a long supermarket bill or a two-page hotel folio?

Long strips are read in sections automatically. For multiple pages, tap + Add page in Review.

Does it need internet to read a bill?

No. Reading runs on the phone.

Filing and export

How do I get bills to accounts?

Export → pick This month, Last month or a range → Generate → Share. One ZIP with every image, an Excel summary and a manifest. See what is in the package.

Does exporting mark bills as submitted?

No. Export marks nothing. Mark as Submitted is a separate tap after you have actually sent the package, so Pending always means “not yet handed over”.

I photographed the same bill twice.

The app tells you: “Already captured on 14 Aug”, with a link to view the first one. If the second photo differs but the invoice number, date and amount match, an amber banner in Review flags it. The default is to warn; Block repeats in Settings makes near-certain repeats refuse to save.

Can I add my own categories or payment types?

Yes, both, in Settings. They appear as chips on every bill. A payment type can be marked personal so those bills never show as Pending.

Can I re-send an old export?

Yes. Every package you generated is listed under Export and can be shared again or deleted.

Getting the app

Which phones?

Android and iPhone (iOS 16 or later). See Download.

Is it on the Play Store / App Store?

It is on its way to Google Play and the App Store. Until it is listed, contact us and we will get you started, and tell you the day it lands.

How much does it cost?

Does it sync between my phone and tablet? No, and by design. There is no server to sync through. Each device holds its own bills.

Will there be backup?

Planned: an encrypted backup you save to your own drive and restore on a new phone, still without any server of ours. See the roadmap. Until then, exports are the backup.

Can it send bills straight into Zoho, Tally or our accounting system?

Planned. Every future integration will consume the same export package that exists today. See the roadmap.
